Saving...
Fri. 9. This morning our regiment struck its tents and moved upon the hill inside of the fort, the change is a very good one, since we can have plenty of good wood near by, and water pumped into a large reservoir from the river by a stream pump 40 ft below the ground. Worked very hard to have things placed in a ship shape manner, am tired. Sat. 10 Lt. Mayer rec’d a letter containing $10. We put it to good use instantly by purchasing a nice little camp stove costing $6.00 and other things. Got acquainted with some Germans in this town and had an excellent time. The report is circulating that our army has been repulsed at Vicksburg. Sun. 11. I had command of the regiment the other officers being absent. It is excellent weather. Had very good times down town. Saw the Lt. Col., who is not improving any.
