Tues. 20. This is a very strange country with regard to rain, it is still raining, this is certainly unpleasant and decidedly unhealthy. Considerable grumbling is manifested by the men on account of not getting enough to eat, this is certainly very strange when others not only get enough but even have some provisions left. Wed 21. While the Col, and myself, also Capt John and Whicher were seated in my tent quietly and sociably partaking of an oyster supper, there came an order to send out 4 companies, since the report came in that the rebels were advancing towards this place. My comp. was ordered to fall in under arms and to sleep on them which was done but we were not sent, out, it was afterwards ascertained to be a union cav. Co. that had camped near here for the night. So we did not have a brush
