Saving...
Fri. 13. Did considerable running about, got my man Dietrich Sauer released from the hospital, took him to Straggler’s Camp. Paid the Grey Beard Regiment a visit, they were all very glad to see me. Saw a great many of my friends, some that I had not seen for many years. Went to the German Theater and saw the tragedy called Uriel Acosta performed. I feel quite at home in St. Louis, I love it, for it is the place where I was raised and received my early education. It did my soul good to observe the old buildings that I used to frequent in my youthful days, and the countenanes of the companions of my youth, who shared many a frolick with me. But how changed is the entire city, it has improved magically, its large temples of learning, and huge halls of commerce, strike the thinking man with a pleasant thought of man’s knowledge.
