Saving...
Fri. 20. I was officer of the day. Got my hands full of business, had all the side walks repaired, went up to the magazines with a squad of men, who built a house for the guards there, went back to Cairo, and drew lumber and nails for it and was busy all round, felt tired in the evening and went to be early. The weather was exceedingly beautiful. Sat. 2. Mrs. Hill and Stewart came from Cairo this morning, they brought me a small package of magazines, letters and papers. The change of the weather is very great, yesterday as pleasant as could be, today raining and snowing. Lt. Mayer was absent from his quarters last night, and tonight without permission. I sat up until after twelve o’clock P. M. writing some letters and attending to the posting of my journal. How the wind howls. The “Courier” of the 19th inst., has another communication against me, it is a very pusillanimous affair, it hurt the author more than me.
