Fri. 13 About daylight this morning we left the City of Cairo, on board the government steamer, “White Cloud”. Arrived at Paducah Ky, at 2 P. M. took some coal on board, let several steamers with troops precede us, and started after them about 3 P. M. Overtook three gun boats about 5 P. M. and landed about one mile below fort Henry at night where the other steamers also lay to. Nothing save a few fires were noticed, on shore during the night. Sat. 14. The Tennessee river is a very fine stream, it is quite high now, and navigable for large boats as far as Florence Alabama. I took out my opera glass, to view the fort, but found it nearly inundated, and the barracks deserted. The gun boats steamed on a little farther, to fort
