Saving...
Friday 27. The rebels are reported in this vicinity, as being in strong force at Ripley a small town in Mississippi about 25 miles from here, and making motions as if they intended to pay us a visit, we are preparing our works to receive them. I was officer of the day to day and had some experience outside of the line during the night. Had a floor laid in my tent, and commenced building a small house in front of it, which will make me feel more comfortable, I can hardly remain in my tent now, since I have no fire in it, but I hope to have soon. Saturday 28. Rumors of a great battle having been fought at Chattanooga, in which Gen. Grant whipped Gen. Bragg severely, are in circulation. The workmen are still engaged in improving my premises. It rained very hard today and I spent most of my time in Lt. Kern’s tent where I find a pleasant fire. Sunday 29. The weather is quite cold, I regret very much that my stove for which I sent by Lt. Sloan was purchased by him and locked in a trunk for transportation and left in Memphis, It may be weeks ere I get it. The men who are at home with their families today, in a warm church perhaps ought to be grateful and compare their comforts with our suffering
