Thursday 31. The old year is dying hard. This is one of the worst days I have ever experienced. It commenced with rain, then it hailed and snowed, and finally it began to storm and to freeze to such an extent that it was nearly impossible for any person to exist out doors. If this is a specimen of a Tennessee winter I would certainly prefer the winter of Iowa. This evening it is extremely cold. I went to the party, but owing to the inclement state of the weather but few attended it. Col. Hill Col. Bell, surgeon Hofmeister and myself amused ourselves in playing cards while the rest danced, or carried on some other amusement. While the year of 1863 is dying, let me muse on its history. What has it brought us? Ah, yes some bless it for the choicest gifts of fortune, which they received from it, while thousands bewail the loss of loved ones, who fell in the defense of their country in this eventful year. What mighty battles have been fought in it, “Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Vicksburg and Chattanooga”, all names that will be written
