2 went aboard the steamer Champion at 7 P. M. for Memphis. Could not procure free transportation, left Cairo about 10. P. M. went 20 miles below Columbus and laid to until morning, on the Kentucky shore, on account of low water 5th crafted over to the Mis. side unloaded the men and horses and traveled the [next?] 3 miles down the river lightening the boat to cross a sand bar, passed island No. 10 at 10 o,clock A.m. distance from Cairo 65 miles, stoped at Peir Madrid at 11 A.m. dist from Cairo 75 miles, laid to for the night on the deck 100 miles above Memphis. 6th in the evening were requested to go aboard, laid to at Island P. 25
