3 on returning on board, the fare for the trip was demanded & paid. made slow time stoped twice to wood, weather hot, arrived at Memphis at 10 P.m. went ashore; had divine service on board during the day. 7th monday morning clear & hot. Champion still at the landing, drew rations for 8 men informed ourselves concerning transportation, convinced we could do no better than pay our fare and go down on the Champion, went aboard the Champion at 11 A m. Saw C. Handy at Memphis, heard that Dr. Jones son in law was drowned at Cairo on the 4th, left Memphis at 12 m. fare from Cairo to Memphis 1.25 distance 250 fare from M. Vicksburg 1,75 dist 400 miles arrived at Helena
