Sound travels at the rate of 1142 ft. in a second in the air, 4960 ft. in the water, 11,000 in cast iron, 17 000 in steel, 18,000 in glass, & from 4636 to 11,000 in wood. The greatest height at which visible clouds ever exist does not exceed 10 miles. The pressure of the atmosphere upon every square foot of' the earth amounts to 6160 lbs. an ordinary sized man sustains the pressure of 30,340 lbs. Water, when converted into steam, increases in bulk, 18,000 times.
