Pittsburg, California July 19, 1944 Dear Dave; About time you had a few words of appreciation for the "Scuttlebutt" from the Brown's out if Calif. No fooling Dave we enjoy each and everyone so very much and we really look forward to them. We think it is super of you to donate so much time to the "Scuttlebutt" but you must get a feeling of satisfaction when you know everyone enjoys it so much. For our part you couldn't improve it one teeny tiny bit, so keep it coming. You've probably heard about the big blow up here at Port Chicago. Ye gods it was terrific + pathetic. We were at the movie + my first tho't was - we've been bombed! Anyway that theater was vacated fast + I do mean fast. We came home to see if Tommy was ok + he was, but a little frightened. The couple who were keeping him had their curtains fall down, dishes come clattering down + etc. [We've?] 5 1/2 miles from J Chicago. One ship blew up while loading ammunition + in 10 seconds another ship blew up - Hundreds of sailors were (over)
