Somewhere in China 27 April 44 Dear Dave, Man, was I ever tickled to receive your long novel letters with so much information concerning the fellows from Washington and the metropolis itself. I'm wondering if anyone to whom you write or with whom you carry on correspondence is further from home than we officers here in the Southeast part of China? I landed here over eight months ago, after flying every inch of the way from America. All those fine travel talks I've seen in the movies come to life as the world unfolded itself below me. I've seen the Taj Mahal in Agara, India, one of the wonders of the world, as well as Africa, Egypt, Arabia, Puerto Rico, South America, Nigeria, Ethiopia and all of the worlds largest rivers including the Nile, Amazon, Irrawaddy, and all the others, crossed the Himalayas over the"hump" route and landed in [Kunming) China. I'm a long way from there now however. We are training Chinese officers. I've seen the Generalissimo and Madam Chiang and dined with them at a big banquet for we ("Meigwarens"]. Like to hear from you. Hastily Johnny Lee Lt John W. Lee 5315th I.T.C. APO 430 % PM NY NY
