19 Nov 1944 Italy Dear Dave: Have been planning on writing you for sometime but, as always, it's a hard thing for me to do. I have been receiving the "Scuttlebutt" quite regularly and throughly enjoy it. Its a good little paper and helps out a lot. Am sending you a copy of the "Stars and Stripes," Mediterranean edition, so you can see what our paper is like. There is not much I can tell you about myself. Have done a lot of work, saw a little action, and am more or less comfortably stationed at a Navy Hospital. As Senior Dental Officer in this area I have had a number of "inspections" trips and so have seen all of this theatre, and it has been mighty interesting. As a whole it is quaint, dirty, and poverty stricken. The war has really hit these countries hard, Italy especially, except around Rome. It is all a mountainous country, rather easily defended so the fighting has necessarily been quite destructive to the cities and towns. Glad to hear the Y'Mens Club is still going strong.
