October 9, 1943 Saturday afternoon Dear Mother, I'm not positive about my information as it hasn't been settled yet, but I think my immediate future will be good news to you. I've applied for a course called Basic Recreation, which is given here and takes four weeks. [I'd start Monday, & then take the second half of my orientation course (one week) after that]. It teaches all sorts of crafts, music, singing, dancing, active & indoor sports and I think it would be grand preparation. I've also asked for more hospital experience in this country before going overseas. We were supposed to get only two weeks, and might get less than that. Remembering my visit to see Mae Lynch, I thought it might be better to get somewhat inured to hospitals before landing in one overseas, where the work would be so necessary. The personnel staff member I talked to said I could be given assignments through the St. Louis office
