Dec. 14, 1944 Dear Dave: The 37th Drip of your "Scuttlebutt" (that's a salty term!) , together with the printed supplement reached me yesterday and I enjoyed reading it very much. I had previously heard of it (favorably) from others and Dad told me some time ago to look for it but it just didn't appear. I would be most happy to remain on your mailing list. Evidently Lt. Harold Schneider thinks everyone in the Navy is a "Seaman." In fact, he admitted to me that he had never been able to figure out the various Navy rates. Of course those of us in the Navy think the Army rates are much more confusing! In case you don't know what a Specialist (C) is in the Navy, he is a Classification (hence the "C") Interviewer. There are around 850 that hold the rate in the Navy. there are two branches of the work: (1) Selection, and (2) Classification, and I've been in both. While at [Farragut?] I was in Selection, which includes the testing and interviewing of all recruits while they are in training, and making specific recommendations as to their future assignments -- school, general detail, temporary duty at the training station, etc. Since I've been at the Receiving Station here in Bremerton, I've been doing Classification work. Here we interview men already in the Fleet or available for assignment to it. Our work is done (over)
