U.S. Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida [May 1, 1945] Tuesday Evening, Dear Dave, I have been receiving my "Scuttlebutt's," very regularly & enjoy them very much. The last time I wrote you I mentioned that we didn't have our flying hrs. all in as yet. Well, we finally got in our required his. to graduate & I took my ground school finals & came out O.K. You see even though I finished ground school about eight weeks ago, we couldn't take our finals until we got in our hrs. Anyhow, it was nothing that a little review couldn't fix up. We are now awaiting the big day & at the present time living in the "Bird Cage" as we call it here. In other words it's just the barracks where you await designation. And also another expression they use down here is getting the "Bird" (Gold Wings). We have to attend a few officer aptitude classes & then do a lot of checking out before Tuesday. As far as I know now I will get no leave, but we'll have to go right on to operational training in larger sea-planes (PBM, Mariners) probably over over
