Jan. 3, 1944 Monday Afternoon Dear Mother, I don't seem to have more than one letter of yours to answer, number 20. I suspect that tomorrow will bring a chunk of mail, as each holiday seems to throw them off their stride. I've been averaging four or five letters a day and struggling to keep up the race. I'll tell you about how I spent New Years first & then talk back. I went out to McGarvey's about 5 o'clock Friday, going by bus all but the last lap, when George met me. We sat by the fire & visited, I with a charming Siamese cat in my lap. George showed me his collection of cameras which is the best I have seen. He has a movie camera, a color camera, one for portrait work, one for taking those rapid shots and a fine little one for candid shots. By the way, I took several pictures there & finished up the roll but I very much doubt if they are good. There wasn't the usual click, and when I got the roll out & investigated I found the shutter worked very peculiarly. Now I can't decide whether to have the camera fixed or send it home to you & let you struggle with it. I guess I'll let it depend on how long it will take to repair. To go back, we had a lovely meal about 8:30, finished about 10:30, wine & all & then sat by the fire & heard radio programs till the new year. Then Julia & I washed the dishes & I got out my pajamas & toothbrush from my Nursette bag & went to bed under gold colored sheets and a green down puff. It was so quiet & fresh that it was a rare treat. She had said we would have brunch about 11, so I got up at 10. We had
