Saving...
[Jan. 14, 1944] Friday night Dear Mother, I have been having such an interesting and enjoyable time the last three days that I hardly know where to start. As I told you, I was to report to Walter Reed Hospital Wednesday. I went out about eight. I can get a bus just a block from the hotel which takes me to the District line (right up near where Don lives) 35-minute ride. Then I take a Forest Glen bus that winds around a wooded suburb, ending finally at a railroad station. (12 minutes) Going through the station platform you come to an archway and steps going down into what looks like a park. The hospital (Forest Glen Ambulatory annex) is in what used to be an exclusive girls' school, National Park Seminary. The grounds are beautiful & you go across a high foot bridge over a little brook. The big buildings sprawl all over the top of the hills and are rather rustic in type. The floors are all carpeted and the chandeliers are crystal. The Red Cross Recreations Hall is a big round ball room with a raised edge all around that is wide enough for sofas, pianos, radios, chairs, game tables, etc. The hall is three stories high and all around it are little balconies, where wards end. The wards radiate off from the hall on about half of its diameter.
