[Jan. 18, 1944] Tuesday night Dear Mother, I got a notice from National that there was a package there, but didn't have time to call for it today. I'll try to pick it up tomorrow. I see I also have letters & 27 to answer and 2 cards. Dear, dear! I 'd answered them but hadn't checked them! I'm glad the street picture came. I've thrown away several other slips because I thought maybe they weren't reliable. No, one shoulder isn't higher. I think I had a package or was reaching for something. The strap goes on the right shoulder & the bag hangs under the left arm. I'll try to get a picture that shows the whole thing. The clippings were very interesting. I hope my Red Cross picture isn't as terrible as that poor girl's! I was glad to hear about "Hanty". I saw Tom Farmer yesterday & he said he was going back to duty today. Guess his leg wasn't so badly hurt after all. I was disappointed Saturday night, as I had planned to go with the Iowa patients to the party, as I said. That afternoon it started to sleet so that taxis wouldn't even go out to the hospital, so their leaves were cancelled. Saturday I played checkers with a 17th air force fellow from Missouri who was wounded in Sicily. I have at least a game a day with him. Maybe I'll learn to play checkers yet. Then Saturday I fell in with a bunch of terrific bridge players and we played again Sunday night & Monday night from 6 to 9. It will either kill me or cure my game. Tell Mary I'll never be the same.
