[Jan. 23, 1944] Sunday night Dear Mother, If you'll look in the September, 1943 National Geographic, page 262, you'll find a picture of one side of the Recreation Hall where I am working, as well as of the patients' outfits. I still love it and find it quite stimulating. You'd be surprised at my "line", and at the rapidity of its development. I laughed inside this morning when I found myself saying to a fellow I'd seen for the first time yesterday, "Do you still love me?" The situation seems to call for a nice mixture of kidding, rapt attention, admiration and quick dodging. The latter is far from being figurative, as they are as playful as a bunch of bears and a person is apt to feel a little battered by the end of a day. Tonight, for example, I seem to have a slightly stiff neck, directly traceable to being hooked by a cane while I was sitting peaceably minding my own business. I played quite a lot of 4 handed cribbage today and between games a fellow from Minnesota decided I needed exercise and walked me around the hall. Do you remember my mentioning a
