Saturday Jan 29 [1944] Dear Mother, You might take my last letter and strike out what I so gleefully said about not having a cold! I got one the day after I wrote (got it Tuesday) and I guess it was a very mild form of flu. Tuesday was my day off, so I took it easy and slept all afternoon. I stayed home Wednesday and Thursday, going out just for meals and an occasional walk. Yesterday I went back to work and had a fine time. The patients were so solicitous and it was flattering that they had missed me. I got the cribbage tournament going so well that by last night they had reached the point they were supposed to reach Wednesday -- next Wednesday. I got a cute little cribbage board this morning to use as a prize, as the boards seem to be scarce around there. With three recreational roommates life was far from dull, even when I was all stuffed up. I was treated to everything from a pyramid puzzle to a strip tease. Usually all three were on my bed, sitting on my feet and reading me jokes, old love letters or bits from Reader's Digest. We did card tricks and played all sorts of games. They are a rare lot. I got Maureen's book Tuesday, and think it is lovely. I hope I'll get to see the spots in the pictures some day. No, I don't know where Tom Farmer had been, nor where he went.
