Saving...
Wednesday, Feb. 23 [1944] Dear Mother, You'd be amazed if you could see the size of the breakfast I've just eaten. And how nice and early I ate it. My room mates have gone back to bed, but I thought it would be a good chance to write a bit. We Red Cross workers gave a party at the Station Hospital Red Cross building last night for the nurses and medical officers of our unit. I guess it was a success, and it was certainly well-attended. They are a swell bunch. I saw Col. Dyke, the head of our unit and also Major Anderson, who is with us. Major Anderson said he thought Rollie Williams was now in Hawaii. Is Virginia still home? Col. Dyke says he is going to write Grace [His sister, Grace Dyke Trenneman, once my H.S. English teacher] all about my being here. He is quite intrigued and also seems pleased. Needless to say, I was mighty glad to see him too. Life continues to be both interesting and pleasant, and I am well taken care of. My dietician roommate sees that I eat the right things and the other two generally watch out for me. Yesterday I almost got a bed bath, as I said I wanted a shower, but was lazy. One of the nurses in my room is Kathleen Thomas, from Cedar Rapids. Love, Helen P.S. I heard from Mary & Jane Shuttleworth and got your letter written the day I phoned. 38
