Saving...
Friday, Feb. 25, 1944 Dear Mother, I just got your letter 40. The one you said you mailed a day or so before hasn't come yet, but I trust it will eventually. It made excellent time, as its Iowa City postmark is the 23rd. It was a good thing I heard today, as I was beginning to wonder if I should phone. I'll answer your questions first. No, I don't need the address book, as I copied the names into a tiny one I can carry on my person. No, I don't think I'll need the wool shirts. I have other warm underwear, which will do. You will be able to send me a package a week if it is under 5 lbs. and if I request it. So use the slips and stockings and if I need more and can't get them I'll let you know. The picture, I think, is of Eva Ridgeway & her boy. "The Boss" called himself and was called "Johnny Eager" after the movie. His real name was Frank Molinera. The roll of film will probably be a disappointment when you see the spoiled ones. That was when the shutter didn't work. I have a total of twelve rolls to take. Your letters, too, will probably be censored when they go out of the country. The slate-colored birds are juncos. I'm sorry about Besse's little girl. Can they do anything about her? Don was right. Now for the letter itself: I went on pass with Joyce yesterday and we had lots of fun. We shopped, went to the top of the Empire State building and then went over to her home in Brooklyn for supper. I enjoyed it very much.
