April 2, 1944 Dear Mother, I just finished writing to Maureen, Freddy and Mrs. Gilchrist. I can't really get in touch with them until I am permanently located, but thought I'd better let them know I was around anyway. I'm afraid it's going to be rather impractical to number my letters because of the way I mix V-mail and regular mail. However, if you watch the dates you'll get them in the right order eventually. Did I tell you about our straw mattresses and our lack of sheets or pillows? At any rate, we are used to them now and find them quite comfortable. The straw is smoothed out and the blankets are much softer than those from the last war, so they are comfortable next to one. I usually fill my canteen with hot water and put it by my feet just before I get in. Our foot lockers and bed rolls, with flashlights and hot-water bottles and all in them, went by mistake to London, so we are still living out of our suitcases. It is now a good two months since we
