2 a delightful and wonderfully preserved old fortress - castle [Carnaervon(?)] built in the thirteenth century. Only the wooden parts were gone, and we scampered up the narrow, winding stairways way to the top of the towers and along the walks on top of the walls. We didn't have a guide, but just a map and booklet, so we pranced around just as we wished. The middle part was lovely, close-cropped grass, with a bank of daffodils, with the grim gray walls with their slits for archers all around, it made quite a sight. There is another castle (Conway) of approximately the same age very near here, and we are going to bicycle there some afternoon soon. That castle is very romantic looking, as you approach it by a big, modern, graceful suspension bridge and see the whole thing
