April 12, 1944 Dear Mother, Another day and no letter yet. The only one from you so far is the one written before you knew I'd left. Maybe it's because they are coming ordinary mail instead of v-mail or airmail. Mrs. Aronson, whom I'll refer to henceforth as J., and I took a nice hike last night. We took some old bread along and sat way up high on a cliff. Before long we were surrounded by gulls, which are very funny close up. They sat and squawked until we tossed them something and then jumped and caught it in midair like dogs. J. got excited and threw a whole biscuit and one of them swallowed it. The lump was huge in its neck and J. implored it, "Oh, say something! Say something!" She expected it to choke before her eyes. Instead, the lump settled
