April 17, 1944 Dear Mother, I had a nice letter from Freddy yesterday and one from his wife, Winifred, a couple of days earlier. As I had suspected, that was his "big news". She is Mrs. Gilchrist's sister. They both wrote most enthusiastically, inviting me to their house any time I can come. They, (that is, Win) live in Kent, however, and since over night passes seem to be off for the time being, I don't think I'll get there very soon. Freddy's unit is stationed within bicycling distance of where I'll be, so maybe I'll get to see him there. Yesterday was such a delightful day. One of the physiotherapists, whom I like a lot and whose name is Polly Wilcox, lives in the room next to Linden and me here. She got her degree at Cedar Falls and is peppy and a great one for bicycling. We started out after lunch and went all day, just following the
