lanes that looked prettiest. As we got away from the sea the trees took on a mid-summer look of dense foliage, and the flowers were beautiful. We must have ridden twenty-five or thirty miles in all, getting in the wildest variety of scenery. Some hills we had to walk up, but we cashed in on them going down. Once in a while we followed footpaths and lanes so steep we had to walk down, but they were worth it. The birds sang so sweetly and once in a while we'd hear rollicking bells. We spoke to everyone we met, and we must have had dozens of conversations on everything from the war to how to raise cauliflower. The town that was the hub of our activities had a gorgeous old grey castle, same vintage as that I told you about, so most of the views were backed by that.
