     14 Aug., Tuesday
     At sea

Dear Dable and Mavid,
I just broke out the "Scuttles" and the guys started reading them. One kid's got a whole lap full of them."Where's this here Columbus Junction?"
"Ha ha, who's Beaublossom?"  "Boy, here's Ainsworth - are we ever getting around!" " Wow, here's a guy stationed at Trenton, N.J. - that's right near where I live - now you're talkin'!" Thats' the way it goes. 
Got you're letter on the Journal being sent out.  Much as I enjoy the Journal,  I think it's a wise idea because a lot of fellas don't even read their's and a lot of shipping space is wasted thataway. The "Scuttlebutt" contains enough of the word to keep me informed anyhow. The same is probably true of most of the rest of the Joes too, 'magine.  But, whatever you do, don't stop sending "S". - it's a real mainstay!

We've sure been at sea for a long time. I mean on this operation, anyhow.  Solid ground is really going to look good when we get there. There's a slew of peace rumors going around & for a while we tho't the war was over, but you are reading how and what we're doing. Just hope & pray by the time this gets there it'll all be over. Don't expect us home rightaway, tho, by a long shot, for there will be plenty going on for a while. 

Wait'n'll you see my moustache and goatee. It's fierce!  When I wax up the ends of the duster it looks like a Texas longhorn.  Just hope they'll let us keep them 'cause there's a lot of fellas got good full beards.
