Saving...
Scott Field, Ill. Sept 26, 1945 Dear Dave, With each consecutive drip from the ever welcome scuttlebut I promise myself I'll write. So since I believe in keeping promises, especially to myself, as the little jew said, "Well, her I am again." Or hadn't you heard that story? You will be glad to know that my drip does triple duty thusly. First I read it avidly a few times, say two or three, second I send it home to my wife who enjoys it I think as much as I, and thirdly Mrs. Shelman who is helping Bonnie with the house sends it to her son in Germany. Quite often too, several of my buddies also read it here. My status is still casual. As far as I am concerned they can leave it at that till they cough up the paper that spells freedom. That is explained by the facts that this is the closest field to home and I can get home on weekend passes. Also I work at the theater in our area to make a few shekels to bolster my three and a half a day. You surely have heard of a private's pay - three squares and fifty cents - I guess every G.I. dreams like myself of an honorable discharge now that actual combat is thru. It can't come too soon. Sincerely, Werner Lowry [Pvt. Werner M. Lowry]
