May 9, 1944, Italy Dear Dad & Mom: Everything is going fine here and I'm getting along okay. Have had more time to myself the past few days than ever before in my army life. Read another book, "The Red Badge of Courage" it's about the civil war, not historically but about the men. their reactions to the fighting, etc. Had a real surprise yesterday, one of my old friends I lost last November, came to see me. He is located about twenty miles from where I am so I should see him quite often, several of my other buddies are in his camp including our old adjutant whom I played on the football team last fall with. Brad's letter (Jackson) came yesterday and I enjoyed hearing from him very much he writes a good letter, almost like a visit. Must write back soon, he must be a first Louie now. His new wife is from Fort Dodge did you remember that from his wedding announcement in the paper? I am getting a pretty good tan, will soon be darker than the natives. Aim to work as much as possible without my shirt and
