Saving...
July 11, 1944 Italy Dear Dad, Mom & Grandmother: It's a bit cooler here this morning which is a welcome relief from the heat we've been having. Am going to take all my clothes out and air them this morning for they get kind of musty stuffed into duffel and barracks bags. Also must clean up my mess kit with steel wool thats about a weekly job if you keep them halfway shiny. No mail the last couple of days, but will get some today I expect. We can say a little more about where we've been in Italy now. I've moved around some, seen Naples, Mt Vesuvius was glad it was erupting was nice of it to put on a special show for us this year. Saw the kings palace at Caeserta, wasnt such a prepossesing structure. Have been to Bari and numerous other small towns none of which are so hot. Today is laundry day so will have to get mine ready to go out. So far I've gotten everything back except a few handkerchiefs and various substitutions on caps & sox have been made but I guess no one else can wear my size shorts & coveralls. Im trying to write this with the accompaniment of one of the boys learning to play a sweet potato and the squeaks & false notes are just a bit disconcerting. I got the Argo you sent and the package of candy, having the bon-bons & chocolates in it. Wish it had been the licorice instead, thanks a lot. No letters again today but they'll come. Just got a couple of shots, regular ones we get every six months. Typhoid and typhus this time.
