[V-mail letterhead with To and From addresses] July 11, 1944 Dear Sis, King & Bobby: Got the Des Moines Service edition you sent, four or five days ago. I read it and passed it on to another Iowa fellow. Gosh all those flood and tornado pictures didnt look very good to me must have been a dreadful season. Here it's dry as can be the country begins to look like Dakota and it can get mighty hot. I'm as brown as an Indian from the waist up for I work with just the bottom half of my fatigues on. We're keeping busy and I believe the boys are doing a lot of good, surely hope so for I know a lot of guys are ready to come home. I've seen quite a little of Italy, been to Naples, saw Mr Vesuvius erupting, the kings palace which isn't so very impressing visited Bari and numerous other small towns which arent so hot. Built myself a bed the other day we were issued regulation canvas cots but they arent heavy duty enough for this soldier. Built a good rugged framework and nailed steel bands from packing boxes cross-wise & lengthways and laced them together. Sleep like a log on it altho in the morning the boys could play checkers or tit-tat-toe on my back. Im getting along okay, feeling fine and keeping out of mischief. Wrote to Red [illegible] wonder if he got it, expect he is a mighty busy boy and I sure hope he can be home soon. Say hello to him for me. Love, Johnny
