July 16, 1944 Italy Dear Dad & Mom & Grandmother: Well I've just had a nice visit with Charly Kaeppel, was glad to see him again. He came over to see me, got transportation somehow. We are about fifteen miles apart which doesnt seem far, he knows where Pixler is but that is forty or fifty miles from where I am so may not see him for some time. Our mail is not coming thru so well again. Seems like it goes in cycles for awhile good service, then a lull and there is none at all. They do a truly wonderful job of it tho with all they have to handle and the miles they must transport it. We are having a movie tonight but dont guess I'll go. I saw it back in the states, was funny too "Miracle of Morgans Creek." We have a long walk to get there and I've taken my shoes off and have on my moccasins, those things have worn like iron and I really enjoy them. I was lucky to get a few things like that across with me. Our camp is blessed with the usual amount of dogs, cant see these Italian pooches vary much from the nondescript hounds we had back in the states. All sizes, shapes & colors and they seem to understand English as well as dago. I got so sleepy I had to stop last night will try and write a little more this morning. Was cool last night and I really slept didnt have to get up as early as usual either. Had a treat for breakfast this morning real fresh eggs and they were fried very well, wish we might have them every time instead of the powdered ones. It's a lot of wasted effort on a hens part to lay good eggs and
