July 29, 1944 Italy Dear Dad, Mom + Grandmother: Have been trying to find a cool place this afternoon to write and have succeeded, or by contrast it is much cooler then our tent. One of the other crews has a hut that can be opened on the sides and there is a hit of a breeze stirring which makes it quite liveable. Got my Des Moines service edition a birthday card from Aunt Jennie and a nice letter from you they all were mailed the twentieth so they made good time, much better than usual at least. Didnt have to get up so early this morning and I really pounded my ear those extra couple of hours. Its so hot that we cant sleep any daytimes even tho we do have to work late nights. One of my crew went to Naples today, the Commanding Officer is very good about taking the fellows whenever a plane is going to any of the towns of interest they gather up a load and take them along. Surely hope I can meet Bob in Rome or some other town and have a day or two together. I meant to tell you before about my bonds they have changed the allotment amounts. So they have discontinued the six dollar and a quarter one like I had. Dont think Ill take another one just send the money home and the bonds can be bought there. The last bond you got will probably be the last one, think it is just two years ago that I started them. so I should have eight of the twenty five dollar ones.
