a thing about it. Our drill is rather interesting now. We have manoeuvers. This morning we had rear-guard action. Our infantry was retreating and a battery of twelve machine guns covered their retreat. The enemy were advancing in column on the other side of the river at a distance of 800 yds. Two machine guns were placed on each side of the road three hundred yards nearer the bridge. That made their range 500 yds. When the enemy (imaginary of course) discovered the fire of the first four guns they immediately deployed and advanced as skirmishers. Then when they had come to within four hundred yards the first four guns retreated. Four more machine guns had been stationed about 200 yards in the rear of the first four and these promptly opened
