Saving...
May 14, 1944 Dear Mother, Several days have slipped by since I wrote last and during them I received two letters from you, numbered seventy-four and five. Each took only five days to come, which I think is reasonable. I'll answer them first and then tell you what I've been doing. I still haven't gotten any 5-lb packages, but the girls say they take about a month. The smaller ones come through well. Encore! I'll be glad to get the sheets to have in reserve, as they may take ours from us when casualties come in in numbers. Any kind of candy bar will do, and any amount of instant chocolate will be most welcome. Also cookies. I should think things like packages of fig Newtons would come well. Your plan for the checks sounds good. The only drawback to so many bonds would be that I'd want to be sure to have enough ready cash for the income tax that will be due shortly after my return. I might suggest a bit more in Postal Savings till that is well built up. As I told Betty, my garden is planted. I won't repeat the details, but we had a swell rain yesterday that should start it up. I'd like a small-mesh cotton or rayon hose. I don't care what you pay for them--dime store
