May 28, 1944 Dear Mother, I have a nice bunch of letters to answer. It is a beautiful day and I'm sitting by the casement window in my room, writing on a little green table. Just outside several girls are lying on a blanket in their swimming suits, taking a sun bath. The cuckoos are singing in the thicket back of the barracks, and there is the usual steady drone overhead. By the way, cuckoos here do as they should, and sound just like the clocks. The letters I have on hand to answer are seventy-nine (the V-mail) seventy-seven (ditto), eighty and eighty-one. I'm glad you had a nice Mother's Day. Maybe by the next one I'll be back, although they'll have to get going soon to make it. I am getting the Cub news and take it over to the lounge when I finish it. It is much appreciated. Yes, the APO is probably permanent now. Some day I'll explain to you about the changes. Even if I don't get it sent to my correspondents soon, any of the old ones would reach me. That's one thing you can say for the army - they do keep track of people. I enjoyed Edna's letter. I think she will
