May 30, 1944 Dear Mother, I have a V-mail letter from you to answer, number eighty-two. Today I got one from Betty Schroman, but I expect there will be quite a batch of letters and packages in within a few days, as the pickings have been slim lately. It is real summer now, hotter than they ever said England was. It hasn't been over eighty-five, however, and there is a swell, cool breeze. It tends to get not indoors, however. Probably by the time the hot-water bottle gets here it won't seem ridiculous. If you haven't yet bought the cloth for the shelf curtains, something in green, brown, orange, tan figure or stripe would be good. I went to a lovely dance last night with five of the nurses. It was at Rhodes House and was just the sort of thing I thought wartime would open up to a person. I met lovely people there, as at the English Speaking Union dance a week or so ago and have as many contacts for musicals, teas and dances as I will have time or energy to use. The people are very gracious. Last night I danced with several Polish officers, four Canadians, a Scot in kilts, several Americans and an English medical student named Toby Green, who is especially amusing. Every
