The author of The Passionate Witch was Thorne Smith, not Green. My garden is coming slowly. It makes me appreciate Iowa climate and soil. I have lettuce, radishes, cucumbers, carrots, sweet sulton, Bachelor's buttons, poppies, Cal. poppies, nasturtiums and petunias. The aphids are very bad here, the soil is poor, and the days either too hot or too cold for the seedlings. Pleasant for people though. I had a letter from Harriet yesterday. The local paper, to which I subscribe, has been having a series of articles about America at which we sit and shriek. They are so scholarly and so naïve at the same time. Here is a sample: Central heating stoves in basements are common. These knock off fuel supplies automatically if the house temperature rises above 75 degrees, restart draughts in the stove when the temperature falls below 72 degrees, so for months and months no fires are needed in grates. Unquote. Aren't they cute? Love Helen
