June 5, 1944 Dear Mother, I wrote the salutation at eleven o'clock and it is now twelve. In the meantime seven people have wandered in and out & visited. No letter in the last couple of days, but a 5 pound package and a little one of chocolate, both very welcome. The O Henrys and Baby Ruths are both gone already, the sheet and pillow cases stowed away and the cosmetic bag duly admired and put in reserve. I'm well fixed on them now. The hot chocolate will fix us up for one of our spreads. We like the Argintine chocolate and it came quite well. It was cracked in a couple of places, but that was all. Did I tell you that I have three nice English volunteer women? They are Mrs. Spearing, Mrs. Edmonds and Mrs. Devers. One comes on Monday, one on Thursday and one on Friday. They help get things ready for the wards and take care of the craft shop while I'm in and out. They also cut out patterns at home. Saturday night Jay got hungry about midnight and went out, coming back soon full, and bearing a thick steak sandwich for me. Last night Polly brought her mending
