June 28, 1944 Dear Mother, I have a V-mail from you to answer, but for the life of me I can't find it. So I'll just go rambling on a bit. Monday I had a nice full day. The morning I spent with a volunteer helping me, cutting out wallets and getting material ready for making square knotted cigarette cases. The thirty-two strings have to be measured and cut, the work started on a wooden block (this takes at least a half hour) and an individual arrangement thought up for each man, depending on whether or not he has traction scaffolding over his bed, etc. In the afternoon I went on one ward taking the things I'd had requests for and got about six more requests for string work. Horrors! I had a nice volunteer that afternoon too. That evening I worked in the lounge, if you could call it work. I simultaneously played chess, helped a patient with his square knotting and answered questions. The place is just jammed now that we have so many patients & they were even sitting on the floor reading the papers. We fooled around afterwards and had
