July 26, 1944 Dear Mother, I think this will be just a short one, as it is eleven and the water is boiling and I'm expecting Jay and Polly to pop in at any moment for some hot chocolate. It's been quite a day. Guess who was here and whom I met and shook hands with and visited with! The Queen! She is a charming woman and I was so glad to see her and talk to her. She came this afternoon along with assorted guards and ladies in waiting, visited the hospital and then had tea with the officers and nurses. Our volunteer party last night was a great success. About seventy five volunteers and their guests were there. They loved the refreshments and the grab bag presents and we had fun with st[??]ts and visiting. They are so dear, and I liked their husbands and sons and daughters they brought along. They have put in over twelve hundred hours of work for us since we started
