Aug 2, 1944 Dear Mother, I'm trying out my new ink - called South Sea Blues. Just a note because it's very, very late. Jay and Helen C. & I were in Stratford and had a swell time. We stayed at the Red Cross Officer's club in a cosy gabled room way up on top. We had fluffy white blankets and soft pillows and slept like logs. The room was gorgeous and we had the rare pleaseure of good weather throughout. We walked to [Shottery?] in the evening and strolled around the cottage. Then we went back and had a sandwich & [illegible] after sitting in the very pleasant lounge awhile. For the first time since October I committed a breach of uniform and wore my shirt open or the [illegible] & no hat. So did Helen, and Jay wore no hat either. It was very funny, because we met our Red Cross Field Supervisor who smiled at us and said "Hello". In the morning we slept till 9:30, ate breakfast leisurely and walked around the town till lunchtime. We had reservations
