August 6, 1944 Dear Mother, In the last few days I've had three big packages, number 4, one from Betty, and one I forgot to check on before the maid removed the paper so I don't know whether it was numbered one or not. The things are lovely. I enjoy the bath salts a lot. I gave Helen C. one for her birthday - a cherry blossom one. Last night we had a snack of the smoked cheese + bread + hot chocolate. Everyone raved about the cheese. It is swell. I was glad to get the corned beef + spread, but don't send more if they are from your supply shelf. In fact both Jay and I are gaining and must slow up on the evening nourishment. The marshmallows are very good + [came?] well. I haven't opened the orange slices or hard candies yet, as we are going to save them a while for a lean period. The white raisins are lovely. Polly uttered squeaks of delight at them. I just waned across [at?] Claire Hewert, I [?] city, who lives across from me in the next "block". Two hand chocolate and two canned packages also arrived, and five letters
