Saving...
August 16, 1944 Dear Mother, Your most recently received letter, sixteen, got here in record time of fine days. There are a couple missing that I guess I'll get later. This will be very long as I'm awfully sleepy. It was my day off and Jay + I rode to W- finally. It was lovely, and we enjoyed a nap + picnic in the big park around Blenheim Palace, where the Duke + Duchess of Marlborough live. We came home by a different route and all in all it turned out to be a good bit of exercise . We took sandwiches from the kitchen, a couple cans of juice, a canteen of water, some of yours good oatmeal cookie, a couple of big Baby Ruth bars and some gum. By the way, I've been sending little packets of candy home to the children of my volunteers, and how they do appreciate it. Today I had a "thank you" note from nine year old Jeanne Goddard. I'll save it. I don't know why I ever worried about getting rid of the overflow. We've taken quite a few pictures lately. Two rolls are being developed and I have two more to do. We've had perfect weather for three weeks. Not a bit of rain or chill. The crops are beautiful and there is such a sweet grassy smell in the air and a haze in the valleys. It's really beautiful. Time for sleep now. Love, Helen P.S. If you ever have time + space I'd like my blue satin bedroom slippers.
