Pictures - Our unit here at Retreat (taking down of flag at 5 o'clock) Our Red Cross Office P.S. As I was writing about picture, short time out to get into paraphenalia for alert. All clear now. August 29, 1944 Dear Mother, Three letters from you to answer, nineteen, twenty & twenty-one. It's ten o'clock and I'm bathed, etc. & in my pajamas (striped) sitting up in bed. Jay is at the table working a cryptoquote and the water is boiling for our hot chocolate. Polly is due with bread and butter at any moment. Last night we had the Vienna sausage, which was excellent. Tonight we haven't decided. We just finished the oatmeal cookies, which got better after a few hours on a plate out of their box - lost their "packed" taste. Everyone loved them. You don't need to worry about anything being wasted. I gave each volunteer who helps me a lot a package of my ration fruit drops and either a bar or a piece of chocolate. They loved them, as they get very little in that live. I was so glad to be able to repay them for the eggs, plums, and apples they bring me. Me and our guests eat lots, too, but I didn't think it fair to have you go to the trouble it obviously was to send a regular package a week. I had spoken about having enough hot chocolate for quite
