Saving...
October 3, 1944 Dear Mother, Now for the letter about the trip. It will be sketchy for I'll have to fill in details later. I left here Sunday, and spent Sunday night at Cambridge Square in London. It is the place just for us, and is lovely. I had sandwich and a big pot of cocoa before the fire in the drawing room and then went to bed in a soft warm bed in room by myself. There were a couple of alerts and one nice, noisy buzz bomb went roaring right over, or so it seemed as I lay and listened to it. I just love the sound of the siren in London. It is thrilling and makes a person feel all the snugger. Like the howl of a timber wolf in the winter when you're all tucked in. Do you understand? I had a nice breakfast and the porter got me a cab to go to Euston Station. My train left at 10. The trip up wasn't very interesting, as the people weren't interesting in the compartment and it was raining so it was hard to see out. I got to Glasgow early in the evening and followed a tall sailor who looked sleepy. Sure enough, he was going to the Red Cross Club and we got a taxi. He was from Minneapolis and on a week's leave. I was very glad I'd made the reservation
