going to France Tuesday morning and was spending the night in town before going by air. She is now in field clubs - a subordinate of doughnuts and lounge work - at air bases. She seemed peppy and in fine spirits. She is to be rather near Paris. She saw Gen in London and she was to go in a day or so. Helen's hospital experiences weren't good, as the Red Cross unit didn't click so she has been in this other since spring. It was good to see her again. She stayed till her taxi came about eleven thirty to take her to her Y. W. in town. She was much impressed by our setup. Tuesday we cleared everything off our boxes and dressers and tables and put clean towels on them and threw a swell dinner party for Nellie, Polly and Johnnie. Jay was off at two thirty and fixed lovely sardine canapés and smoked cheese ones, with chopped lettuce on them to go with the gin and orange cocktails. Then we had Stribleys soup in cups. Then Jays 3-lb ox tongue sliced by the butchers, her and my shoestring potatoes crisped up, mustard, swiped chopped pickle. Then we had coffee and the lovliest cake. She had the baker bake that white cake mix you sent in two layers and she made a beautiful chocolate frosting and filling for
