New London, Iowa June 14 1918 Dear Vera, Ress, Lucille, and Baby Girl. This will be a rather hastily written letter and I am writing to Erna and Orville also on the same matter. I have a way in which it is possible to get Tom home on a furlough. We are expecting our baby some time in July and the Dr. here that will be in charge will send the commanding officer a telegram asking for a furlough for Tom that he might come home. And no doubt he will be granted it, as they are in extreme sickness. I wrote to Tom and just received a letter from him stating that he would work hard for his furlough. Now since the new rating, soldiers any where in the U.S. can ride for one cent per mile providing they have an order from there commanding officer stating their trip It is practically 1500 miles down there and that would be fifteen dollars car fare one way. I told Tom if he could come that
